              | The Halford Hewitt Centenary Year

St Bees was delighted once again to participate in the Halford Hewitt. This was no ordinary year for the competition, whose committee had big plans to celebrate in style for the 100th anniversary of the first gathering of old boys’ schools on the Kent coastline.

The celebrations began early, in January, with a black-tie dinner held at Grosvenor House, London. The special event held the annual general meeting, the draw for the upcoming 2024 tournament and speeches.

St Bees fielded a strong team of six for the evening, originally meeting at the Caledonian Club prior to the Grosvenor agenda (see below).     | |

              | The Tournament was held as usual in April, with the hopes of the first glimpse of summer-condition golf. As a smaller school, we (St Bees) do well to field a team of ten every year and compete in testing matches. We are showing promise of a decent Halford Hewitt run. Our match against Cranleigh, despite our falling short, was a clear example of this. Minor changes to fortune may have resulted in a different outcome. We held our heads high, as Cranleigh went on to be Cup semi-finalists.

              | We, as a society, rely on spreading the word that this wonderful golfing opportunity is available for all Old St Beghians who possess a reasonable golfing talent and who are willing to test themselves against some of the best amateur golfers in the country.
Please do get in touch if you are interested or know of someone who is. | |
